A recent happening in the most recent Supergirl issue, I won't say what for spoiler purposes, struck me as being kind of familiar.

Here what happened in Supergirl,

Ah, in other eldritch horror news: a new episode of the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody, aired today in Japan.

Woot. ^^

[Sorry about the size of the scans being inconvenient for some. So far, when I fiddle with them, they don't work at all but I'll tinker.]

I never enjoyed LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE. The whole tone was a bit too mean-spirited for me, what with Daddy Warbucks (what a name, he sounds like a Dick Tracy villain)using his assassins Punjab and the Asp to make his enemies conveniently disappear. It was a strip with a strong conservative slant, and although the preaching about self-reliance and pluck was sound enough, it's distasteful how everyone in favor of unions or Social Security was shown to be vile and shiftless. The endless cycle of the plot was unsatisfying, too. Daddy kept dying or disappearing or going off to exploit Third World nations, leaving Annie to fend for herself in small towns where the decent hardworking folks were menaced by socialist ideas. Then Daddy Warbucks came back, there was happy rejoicing and merciless retribution, then he left again. This might still be going on.

Still, there were sometimes some very odd and haunting stories. In 1937, we meet Mr Am. This bearded burly fellow claimed to be millions of years old, had extraordinary knowledge and abilities, and was given to laughing heartily for little reason. He also had a large labor force of voluntary slaves (what, WHAT...?)

To celebrate the return of the Scans_Daily that I knew and loved (with this thread http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/369302.html?view=8885654#t8885654) where they cheerfully dissect a racist caricature in a random Marvel work-for-hire piece), I am posting another random Marvel work-for-hire comic of no importance, but this one is from the 80s and beautifully drawn.

Web of Spider-Man Annual #4! 1985 go go go!

That's the Slug. He appears in this issue.

So as part of Excalibur Redux, I'm giving Excalibur a read. Here's some Nightcrawler awesomeness and other random love from the graphic novel that introduced the team, "The Sword Is Drawn". It's got absolutely beautiful Alan Davis art and that classic Claremont crack.

How cracky, you ask? Orgasm is a superpower.

It turns out Teen Titans Go! #18 was another installment in DC's love affair with chibi characters.

The cover, of course, is a lying liar that lies, because Larry doesn't exactly 'join' anything this issue...

This issue says June 2005 on the cover, so when was it that DC had a crossover with the Chibi Justice League that Superman dreamt up after he got high on Kryptonite? I'm guessing that one came first. Or not.

ETA: Ah, so it dates all the way back to Spyboy/Young Justice. I dug through the tags and found the Superman/Batman: Li'l Leaguers bit actually came after Titans', too. Mightygodking was right: absorbing good ideas from the cartoons is just a proud DC tradition.

Thank you, everyone who said they wanted to see more WW! So I will work my way backwards through my own LJ, posting one a day (when possible) until I've reposted it all. And I'll repost the few non-WW posts I made too, though not till after I'm done with Wondy.

The first few posts will be from this 70's collection, as was yesterday's.

This issue was published in 1945. It was one of my favorites from this old collection, mainly because there was a lot of bondage.

Maybe I need to kick-start a "When The Wrecking Crew Was Awesome" week.

Since the discussion yesterday of Thunderball's characterization in Jeff Parker's Dark Reign: The Hood #1 mentioned that Thunderball's characterization has varied over the years, I thought that I'd post a few pages that illustrate a nice counterpoint to the way that Parker is writing him.

Although it causes me profound and pervasive spiritual agony to say this, the last time I recall Eliot Franklin being written as clearly articulate was by none other than Chuck Austen in Austen's Avengers vol. 3 stint. (This happened to be in the same storyline where Kelsey Leigh eventually became the new Captain Britain in a plot so rife with gleeful abandonment of consistency vis a vis the Captain Britain mythos that I don't think that I've ever met anyone who doesn't gleefully mock it.)

But to his credit, despite the absurd contrivance of Morgan Le Fey deciding to recruit the Wrecking Crew as the best choice to help her achieve dominion over England, Austen wrote a damn fine Thunderball (although, as someone has pointed out, it turns out to not be Eliot at all).

I like this Eliot Franklin; it references old school depictions of Eliot when his genius intellect was in evidence. He utters a literary reference and immediately expresses profound appreciation when Kelsey responds in kind -- to the point that he expresses regret when she refuses to step aside -- but he's not swayed from his stated mission one bit when she does refuse his request to move. It's a nice little character moment for both of them; they're both resolute, smart, and unyielding. I wish more writers would do this with Thunderball because it's just plain enjoyable to read him as a clearly educated and cultured man.

A few days ago we posted about the ambiguity of BFTC's conclusion.

Tony Daniel did an interview and it seems cleared up for the most part. Yes I'm plugging myself again... http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-6770-Batman-Examiner~y2009m5d22-Tony-Daniel-speaks

Last week on his blog, Marv Wolfman wrote, "I wanted to remind everyone that Vigilante #6 is on sale next Wednesday. Vig 6 is the final part of the Deathtrap crossover with the Titans, and I can promise you it will have a very controversial ending. When the guys at DC told me what they had planned, even my gasted was flabbered. The ending is shocking, yes, but it's also a logical one and will be built on in the future."

Title: Wolverine: First Class #12 (Marvel, 2009, 22 pages)
Creators: Fred Van Lente (writer), Scott Koblish (pencils)
Availability: Available In Trade

I found this during a foraging expedition at the local used media shop and picked this up from the quarter bin. I got a laugh out of this just because one of my first RPG groups used to have this argument all the time, and I felt like sharing.

The story takes place during Uncanny X-Men #150, which explains that...thing that Kitty is burning in the first scan.

Anyway, S_D, what say you: costume or uniform?

Mark Waid's new series The Unknown started recently. Not to be confused with his other new series, Irredeemable, or his company's other new series, Unthinkable. I guess they're on an adjective kick.
