Throughout much of the sixties, glitzy spy films and T.V. series (such as The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) were all the rage. Thus was born, in 1966, yet another alternate version of the core Archie characters: The Man from R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. These stories, which ran through 1967, saw the teen agents of P.O.P. (Protect Our Planet) use their wits and high-tech gadgets to keep the world safe from their rival agency, C.R.U.S.H. (acronym never explained, but it's a play on The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'s THRUSH (no periods, and also never explained)).

If you know Archie Comics at all, you must know the Archies. "Sugar, Sugar." "Jingle Jangle." More than one hit animated series. Far out, baby! But dig this: America's #1 bubblegum group (whether fictional or real -- well, real studio musicians) started out in the comics as an affectionate parody of the TV show The Monkees. That's right, complete with nonsensical plots, random costume and scenery changes, cheeky repartee and general carrying on. For example, there was the time the Archies fell victim to a tropical island vacation contest scam.

It's been a while since we last checked in with the "Life With Archie" title. As long-time readers will remember, this magazine showcases the alternate futures where Archie marries either Betty or Veronica. This resulted...somehow...in Hiram Lodge becoming an archvillain. (We've since learned more about what happened to make him that way, and it's a doozy.) Plus a whole host of other subplots.
But today, we're going to look at the main plotline in Life With Archie #16, the marriage of Kevin Keller. This is likely to be a plotline controversial with social conservatives because--

--it's interracial! I'm pretty sure this is the first interracial marriage in Archie Comics, not counting aliens or monsters.
So, how did the happy couple meet? It turns out that even in the future presented here, the US is still fighting a war in the Middle East. :-(

Time to look at Life With Archie #3.

Yeah, Mr. Lodge is still evil. This time, let's do some relatively heartwarming scenes.

Since someone commented on Moose and Midge not being shown together in a previous post on the "What-If" Betty/Veronica futures with Archie, I decided to post the pictures explaining it!!
Seems like they address an issue that made a lot of people feel semi-uncomfortable about their relationship.

You may remember that in addition to adding a gay cast member, Archie Comics had a publicity stunt where they finally allowed Archie to choose between Veronica and Betty, and followed the two separate paths for three issues each.
Evidently, it did well for them, since there's now a new newsstand magazine called "Life With Archie" which continues the stories of the Andrews, both versions. Technically, these are interquels, between the second and third issues of the original storylines. Four pages from #1, where conflict is introduced by means of a villain....

( In Riverdale's darkest hour, a hero will rise... )
And now, over to Betty-World.
( Surely things aren't as bad there...right? )
