"Perhaps the most compelling character has been the Wall, Amanda Waller. There was no one really like her before in comics; I don't think there's been anyone to match her since. She's a woman, she's black, she has no super-powers, and she is as tough and indomitable as they come. She is also flawed herself. We get more discussion in the letters about Amanda than anything else in this book. Some of you absolutely loathe her. That's all to the good. We never claimed she was a hero, or a role model, or without flaws. Compelling - that she is. If Kim and I have made a contribution to the DC Universe, it's probably Amanda. Watch. She won't stay quiet long. Other people will want to use her. Amanda may be back before the Squad is."
- John Ostrander, circa 1992

I had thought about doing a carefully curated selection of scenes of Amanda to contrast with her current actions in Absolute Power. That seemed like a lot of work, so here's just some of my favourites after a quick flick through the OG Suicide Squad TPBs. This is the woman that will go on to forge an alliance with a Brainiac and an evil Batman robot to rob all super-heroes of their powers, remember...

Don't cross Oswald Cobblepot. He will make you regret it, in some of the most monstrous ways imaginable. As the following page from Suicide Squad #5 shows, there are no depths to which he will not sink...

I became a big fan of Richard Dragon after O'Neill used him as a sensei during his Question run in the mid-80's. It reached a point where it became my go-to handle whenever I need to register to something without using my true name, replacing the Riddler (huh, goes to show how old this account is).

So I decided to tackle his old comics, fully aware that they were pure kung-fu exploitation, and he wouldn't have the calm demeanor he shows in the Question run. To my surprise, they are quite passable, but issue #3 is a gem in itself, since it is illustrated by none other than Jack Kirby himself.

Enter the Dick Dragon... no, wait... )

And what a coincidence: 100 years of Kirby, 100th use of the Kirby tag!

With the news that Suicide Squad is finally going to trades I thought it was time for a post. This scene really shows the dynamic that made the book work, the relationship to the experiences of the "villains" and the "heroes". To set it up Bronze Tiger fucked up a mission and the suits want him out...

From issues #37 and #38

Halloween Week (superheroes)

This is from the excellent double sized 50th issue of the SS. It brought all the treads together from the original SS to the current teams. This book was all about very damaged people confronting their personal demons ,both hero and villain.

Here's a little something something for all you Millennium-loving readers out there: issue #9 of the Ostrander Suicide Squad series tied into little post-COIE crossover event and features the rank and file of DC villainy going up against the Manhunters. Alternatively, this post may be considered the 'Ballad of Slipknot'. Slipknot is an old Fury of Firestorm (penned at the time by Ostrander) foe, natch.

Round about four pages out of a 22-page tale. Credits go to John Ostrander on writing and Luke McDonnell on the pencils. Scans belong to two fellows operating under the nom de geurre of HaCsA and Grundy.
