Two more pages. In a comment on my last post I used a term which I thought was alright, having seen it on the cover of this issue, and have been told that it's actually far from cool.

I'm happy to be educated on why it's not a great term to use, so here are two pages from the story in the issue which is what I based my judgement on:

Is Marvel being irresponsible in publishing this? Honest question, not being US-based and therefore being utterly ignorant of most of the conversation around this subject.

So what was the most popular and beloved in-universe heroine of the Marvel Universe up to during the first Civil War?

Now, back to the fun of Avengers Academy.  The series as a whole did not have a lot of tie in material.  Some of the kids appeared in Wasp & Ant-Man, and they also played a role in Marvel Universe vs. Avengers.  We already covered the former, and we're not touching the later for several reasons: 1) It's honestly very bad, 2) It's an AU, 3) They barely do anything there, 4) the art is horrible, 5) They keep drawing the wrong Hazmat (yes, there are two characters named Hazmat at Marvel, the other one was created for the crappy Rise of the Imperfects video game.

But there are a few others, and we'll be going through them here. Avengers Academy Giant Size #1 and Amazing Spider-Man #661-662.  Also, we have #13, 14 and 14.1 of Academy.  Most of these are just side-stories and setup for what's to come.

Oh, and a dance. Because stress.

Three pages from Amazing Fantasy Vol. 2 #1.

The very first appearance of Araña, and, re-reading this earlier today, it occurs to me that when I first read this book I took Lynn’s line about “waiting for my girlfriend” on face value and assumed that Anya was queer. I haven’t really had cause to reassess that reading since. Writer’s intent or no, does it count as subtext when it’s right there on the page?

I probably gave Marvel too much credit, in retrospect, for creating a queer Latino teen superhero, especially since, in recent months they’ve been trying to erase everything but the superhero part of that character description.

One more reason to check out this fine book is the back-up story in which Gil Corazon goes to the Baxter Building to interview the Fantastic Four with very young (and cute) in tow. Here's a couple of pages.

Ok, I have some very minor nitpicks about this issue mainly about the fact we still don't know why Anya's powers aren't working, and the villain coming out of left field but... I have to say as a fan of teen superhero books every since the days of Superboy/Impulse/Young Justice, this probably the most fun I've had reading a comic in months. So yeah... it's on my pull list now. Anyway here's the first four pages.

Spider-Girl vs Screwball: In The Majestic Marvel Manner! )

There's also a back=-up story in which a very young Anya meets the Fantastic Four. I'll try to find some scans from it soon.

Picked up the first issue of the All New, All Different Spider-Girl today and enjoyed the heck out of it. I'll try to get a preview of it up soon. In the meantime here's a cute page from Young Allies #6.

Somewhat over-looked in between the talk of a new creative team, a toyetic new costume, the return of the Hobgoblin, and a misguided attempt at convincing America that someone actually likes Carlie Cooper as a romantic interest there was a really nice little 9-page Araña back-up story where Anya and Spider-Man team-up.

Incidentally Marvel's actually set-up an official Spider-Girl Twitter. Just because Nomad wasn't in this story doesn't mean there wasn't subtext.

Another post for Awesome New Female Characters Week - Introducing Spider-girl Araña, created by Fiona Avery.

Anya Corazon, is the half Mexican and half Puerto Rican 15 year old seconded by the super secret Spider Society (try saying that three times fast) to act as their agent in the fight against the evil Sisterhood of the Wasp. And despite this daft origin, she has risen above it to be awesome all over the place and shortly in her own (probably soon to be canceled) solo series.

So it's Awesome New Female Character Week. What better time to check in with the hot new non-cannon romance find of 2010 ! I'm talking about the "Girl Without a World"... Bucky NOMAD: Rikki Barnes!* and" the Heart of the Spider" Araña ALL NEW SPIDER-GIRL: Anya Corazon.

So here's a nice moment from issue #4 of the supremely entertaining (though recently canceled) Young Allies.

I may have to do a Young Allies week at some point. )

*Ok Rikki technically isn't that new a character, but I tend to ignore the whole Heroes Reborn thing and pretend she's an awesome character created in the last two years.
