“What if we did Perry Mason but with Two-Face? For people who like Charles Soule’s She-Hulk, it's very much that. But for, like, the DC Universe, it's a very kind of fun, kind of like gritty, pulpy take. But with this man at the center, who's desperately trying to be a good man, he has a kind of metaphysical demon that he shares his body with. It's been born through sheer love of the character and just really having a real desire to tell a story about him.” — Christian Ward

It ends the arc that started back in July 2022 with issue #1062 and ran for about two years, interrupted only by 2023's line-wide " Knight Terrors " crossover.

Issue #1088 had Batman fighting Dariah Orgham, impetus of the Orgham family's work to take physical and metaphysical control of Gotham City. He'd overpowered her in combat as those on his side had beaten her servants.

She wasn't beaten yet - the power that she wielded afforded her a monster form, which she took on and threw at Batman.

Batman met her. )

"I lost my friend. I lost my partner. I lost my storyteller. I said, ‘I’m not doing this,’ and I put it in a drawer. I forgot about it... About a year went by and I was talking to Richard Starkings, who’s our letterer and designer and has really been with us from the beginning and in a lot of ways is our inspiration, and Mark Chiarello, who was our editor on Dark Victory and a really close friend of Tim’s. And they started to get me to think about this as, instead of doing a project without Tim, what if we did a project for Tim? What if we made this into a tribute to Tim?” -- Jeph Loeb

Issue #1087'd ended on the decapitation of the Shadow Angel, puppet populist revolutionary set up by the Orgham matriarch Dariah to psychologically cement her family's control over Gotham City, by the Joker's Daughter.

#1088 opened on Duela Dent sighing over the Angel's inadequacy as a threat to the status quo from what'd been his broadcast pulpit: " You deserve better, Gotham. "

She gave them better: " I went out and planted some funny explosives in ordinary neighborhoods tonight. "

She explained why. )

The revolution's the puppet one the Orgham family put up in issue #1086 - Gothamites they'd worked up and infused with spirits, led by the figurehead Shadow Angel against Gotham City's " elites ".

Against it was Batman, most explicit of the challenges to the Orghams' total metaphysical control over Gotham, returned from the near-total defeat they'd dealt him.

With him was Nightwing, Azrael, and Batgirl - part of the response he'd been organizing.

Against them was a possessed mob. )

It's continuing from issue #1085 - Batman leveraging Gotham's " darkness " against the order the Orgham family'd imposed on the city.

Having recruited the Maestro and Mr. Freeze, he came next to Harvey Dent.

Two-Face, running a low-key operation on Gotham's rails, met him gun in hand.

Two-Face's goons lay defeated by Batman. )

Catwoman and the crew she'd put together for the occasion had got him away from the Orgham family in issue #1079.

She and Jim Gordon had him in the back of a van, speeding towards the Gotham waterfront - forces led by the Orgham retainer Neang following close.

Neang and his men cornered them eventually, demanded the surrender of Batman to them so that they could finish his ritual execution and the formalization of their power over Gotham.

Catwoman refused. Neang made to take the Bat -

- and then a sniper shot downed one of his men.

A coin turned upwards through the air. )

Another actor from Batman: The Animated Series has left us; Richard Moll, who played Harvey Dent AKA Two-Face, passed away at the age of 80. In my opinion his was one of the best takes of the character.

In issue #1067, representatives of that family'd made their next move in Gotham City - the purchase of land rights in the city's Narrows, the burning of buildings thereon, and the taking of people therein.

Bruce Wayne, hearing about the last two as they were happening, drove off towards the Narrows.

Batman, above the fray of the Narrows, leapt into it. He grappled with the Orgham agents in issue #1068, fought an even enough fight until he was poisoned.

The situation was in the Orghams' favor, then - until Harvey Dent (forcibly pulled into the Orghams' orbit back in issue #1063) gave himself over to Two-Face.

Two-Face made away with Batman. )

As much as I like The Long Halloween, the foreshadowing with Harvey Dent was rather on the nose.
