I wasn't planning on doing this but a few people wanted to see my USM posts cover Miles, so... here we are. Again, I don't know how far I'm going but I think I'll cover the first volume at least.

So here we are, the big finish to Peter Parker's tenure on 'Ultimate Spider-Man' (but not my last post in the series, there's one more). For this arc Bendis was reunited with original artist Mark Bagley. This was a pretty big event for Marvel right down to the ominous previews (which were just 'Death of Spider-Man' leading people to wonder if 616's days were numbered) to the multiple variant covers to the last issue being in a polybag. (I always found the last bit to be kind of funny; they said it was to prevent spoilers but then they went to the press with the ending a day before its release.)

"It's super-dark. You have to imagine someone like Red Skull, who is such an evil force, is so manipulative, and I've always been a believer that once you start to look for the darkness you realize it was all around you all the time. The story is very much a Heart of Darkness sort of story about how you keep going deeper and deeper into this thing and in the process of doing that, the journey to find the Red Skull, it starts to corrupt them. It starts to turn them as well. It gets kinda dark."

Spider-Man: Reign is in my opinion one of the more underrated Spidey stories out there. There's a bit of a "all there is to know about 'The Crying Game'" twist that's overshadowed the rest of the story. It's also been derided as a knock off The Dark Knight Returns (and the similarities are acknowledged with a character called 'Miller Janson') but in my opinion all they have in common is the concept of an aging superhero being called out of retirement. Simply put, Spider-Man and Batman are two very different characters -- you're not going to see Spider-Man as a hardened vigilante beating the crap out of Captain America. They're also products of two different periods; TDKR takes place during the Cold War, while Reign (although the connection is not as explicit) draws parallels with a post-9/11 America.

This marks the final part of Mark Millar's Spider-Man epic.

In 2004 Marvel released a Spider-Man title under the 'Marvel Knights' imprint. The basic idea was to make a more "hard PG-13" Spider-Man title with Mark Millar and Terry Dodson delivering a 12 issue arc in three parts. There's no official title for the whole thing but it's been called "Shush" by the fans given the obvious similarities to 'Hush' that was running around the same time; an "epic" about a mystery villain causing havoc that happens to involve the majority of the hero's rogue gallery.

FWIW, while both are a lot of 'style over substance', I enjoyed "Shush" a lot more. You may think differently.

Well Spider-Verse keeps on trucking on, and the overall attitude of grimdarkness seems to have even ensnared Spider-Girl in its web. However, there is still hope: she's appearing in Spider-Verse team-up, once more in the capable hands of Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz. As a result, I've decided to post my very first entry on s_d to share in the joy that is Spider-Girl. (I've endeavoured to keep it within the bounds of the rules, and I apologise in advance if I've inadvertently broken any or otherwise mess up).
