"I knew all about men... because I'd studied every textbook and thesis on the subject! But one day a rebellious student trapped me wit a real, live man...and nothing in those textbooks could show me how to keep from falling in love with the perfect example of the undesirable male!"

Undesirable Male! )Here some links for when my Photobucket is down.

I have... let's just say I have strong feelings with regard to the rebooted Batgirl. Most of them negative. But rather than going into that and getting myself all grumpy, I thought I'd celebrate the kick-ass character that is Barbara Gordon with some of my favourite Oracle-being-awesome moments.

As was discussed in the most recent edition of House to Astonish, Vertigo had their lowest sales month on record in January 2012. Happily though, they're launching 4 new series soon, including a Fables spin-off with art by Adam Hughes ).

The one that caught my eye, out of the series released in the digital preview, was Saucer Country, by Ryan Kelly (artist of Local, which really is a fantastic book, and of New York 4 and 5), and written by Paul Cornell, of Action Comics, Demon Knights, Captain Britain and MI:13 et al.

Nicking the solicit text from Espanolbot's post you get

Arcadia Alvarado, the leading Democratic candidate for President of the United States, says she was "abducted by aliens."
As the Mexican-American Governor of New Mexico, she's dealing with immigration, budget cuts and an alcoholic ex. She's about to toss her hat into the ring as a candidate for President in the most volatile political climate ever.
But then...a lonely road and a nightmarish encounter have left her with terrible, half-glimpsed memories. And now she has to become President. To expose the truth – and maybe, to save the world.
Arcadia's quest is at the heart of this new monthly series from writer Paul Cornell (DEMON KNIGHTS, ACTION COMICS, Doctor Who) and artist Ryan Kelly (NEW YORK FIVE, NORTHLANDERS). With the help of her quirky staff, Arcadia will pursue the truth of her abduction into danger, mystery and awe. SAUCER COUNTRY is a dark thriller that blends UFO lore and alien abduction with political intrigue, all set in the hauntingly beautiful Southwest.

There's a small house ad and two pages from the preview underneath. It comes with a warning for discussion on domestic abuse

As most already know, Gary Friedrich has lost a lawsuit against Marvel, which means that he has lost the right to call himself the creator of Ghost Rider, he owes seventeen thousand dollars, and he can no longer sell artwork, which was apparently his only means of gaining money.

Most people, when they heard the news, immediately went to Friedrich's defense, calling it yet another example of creator's rights being trampled on by the soulless conglomerate.

Ty Templeton, however, has a slightly different point of view. )

This story got brought up in the comments to my "A Date With Batgirl" post: Batman tries to help his bro Superman hook-up, with disappointing results.
"Wild Week-End in Washington", Superman #268, 1973 (4 pages from a 14-page story).

Yes, believe it or not I do have something to add to "Cute Romance Week"... and not a rope, shackle, or piece of duct tape in sight... honest! :)

These two instances both refer to Jason 1.0, the circus performer, not the street-punk revamp.

This first one is from 1983's "New Teen Titans #33"

Jay meets someone for the first time )

And from Detective Comics 561 in 1986 comes a 15-page story from Doug Moench and Gene Colan which has been messy to cut down because it covers two interesting plot strands in one story and I'd love to showcase both; Bruce and Jason discuss drug use, and Jason gets a girlfriend. I veer more towards the latter than the former given the theme, but I thought it worth mentioning the other too...

And then there was Rena... )

Oh, and some last minute theme approriate Valentine cards perhaps? )
