The art for this comic was done by Michelle Wong, but when I tried to post this the following message came up "Adding this tag would exceed your maximum of 5000 tags. You will not be able to add new tags until you delete 1 existing tag." Sorry Wong...

"I definitely wanted to broaden the Asian diversity. Up until now, the world of ATLA and Korra have been predominantly Chinese and Japanese in culture (and Inuit, for the Water Tribes). I was given the opportunity to design a few of the new main characters, one of whom is Bangladeshi, and another who is Korean. As well, there is definitely a stronger presence of South Asians -- Filipinos, Indonesians, Malaysians, Indians, etc. And since my drawings are stylistically more figurative than the show's style, I try to define more definitive Asian facial features."

"DIMARTINO:The enthusiasm with which the finale and Turf Wars has been received has been humbling, to say the least. I’ve always intellectually known that diversity in media is important, but after hearing so many personal stories about how Korra and Asami’s relationship has inspired young adults to come out to their friends and family or let them know they aren’t alone, I feel that truth on a much deeper, emotional level. It reaffirms for me the undeniable power stories, and the media can have in our culture. When used in an affirmative way, a character or story can literally change a person’s life."

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" and it's sequel "The Legend of Korra" featured some of the best worldbuilding of any cartoon series I've ever seen. The various societies were rich, and complex, and they included their resident elemental powers with creativity and practicality.

One area the cartoon did not expand on was how certain social matters were addressed, and the Korra finale, which showed Korra joining hands with Asami Sato, the woman she loves, as they step into the Spirit World, was positively subversive in showing a blossoming same sex relationship.

Luckily for us.... )

Welp, the series (potentially the animated part of the franchise) has come to an end, and there was much sadness. One of the many things that I liked about the Avatar fandom is the plethora of really talented people producing fanart, so I thought that I'd post some.

Spoilers, obviously.

Modest Medusa - one of my favorite comics (and should be yours too) had a brief take on the final scene of The Legend of Korra's finale, which I think sums things up nicely.
