News is just coming in of noted comic book artist Steve lightle having passed unexpectedly at the tragically young age of 61, due to cardiac arrest related to a COVID 19 infection

I'm sure I join everyone in expressing our sympathies for their loss to his family and friends, of whom he had many, being a genial and pleasant chap on facebook for a good few years.

My first exposure to his work remains probably my favourite; the 1980's Legion of Superheroes, where his slightly cartoony style seemed eminently suited to the sci-fi adventures of brightly costumed superheroes.

And this remains one of my favourite issues, one of the (in)famous "Legion Try Out" issues, in this case from 1985 (with story my Paul Levitz) which goes a bit more smoothly than some of it's predecessors

Selections from MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS are hard, since the stories were 8 pages each (with an exception for WEAPON X). Anyway, here are two pages from one part of a Ghost Rider/Typhoid Mary story.

Trigger warning for misogyny and misandry.

He came just after Peter and Mary Jane'd married.

He struck his first blow after Spider-Man swung home.

Pete was telling MJ about something Aunt May said she'd done..

Something a little risqué. )

Oh my, this IS a tough one, I've been a sucker for team books all my life; the X-Men, the New Mutants, the Legion of Super-Heroes, the JLA, the JSA (Who I mostly knew about through the JLA/JSA crossovers), the All-Star Squadron, Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol, the Batman Family (which I knew when it was at the more ... manageable scale of one Batman, one Batgirl, one Robin and then a replacement Robin and a Nightwing... not that I didn't like the additions, but...) and of course, the New Teen Titans. I'd even count the five principle Bronze Saints from Saint Seiya as a team.

All these have been part of my comic reading experience since the age of... well let's not go there, so picking one is like being asked to pick between a boxful of cute, but different puppies. It's almost impossible.

But, whilst I've posted a LOT of New Mutants and New Teen Titans and Batman Family stuff over the years, there was always one team which was THE team... and it might not be one you'd think of, but it holds a special place in my heart.

OK, so the work on this primer kind of got away from me, mea culpa. But I now have it complete up to the current "The Culling" crossover arc.

In Part 1, we saw how Yera was duped into impersonating Shrinking Violet for months on end, during which time "Vi" secretly married Colossal Boy. Yera was exposed, Vi was rescued, Gim and Yera decided to stay married, and all was on track for them all to live happily ever after.

But first, they gotta tell Gim's parents...

in a story called 'Guess What's Coming to Dinner?' No, really. )

And you can tune in to Legion Lost for more Chameleon Girl, now that The Culling is wrapping up!

One of my favourite characters used to be accompanied by a flying 2 foot diameter eyeball.

Riiiiiiip!

Oh look, we have a guest!

"Who am I talking about?" you ask, well, gather round sd'ers and I shall elucidate...

Eye shall try to avoid any eye puns... Oops )

Whilst digging through a folder of images which I haven't looked at in years, I was delighted to find these which I located years ago, but haven't been able to find since.

Back in 2001 Steve Lightle did some sketches for a proposed animated version of the Legion of Superheroes which never got off the ground (It would be another 5 years before a Legion cartoon series actually hit the airwaves, and would be quite different from this)

Bear in mind these are sketches, not finished designs. You can see the aim was to significantly reduce the average age of the Legionnaires, whilst the bad guys tended to look the way they always had.

"Aren't we a little young to be facing this much peril?" )

But Keith Giffen left the book.

They say it was the poster that did him in.

Ah yes. The famous compositional style, unique to 80s DC, of people randomly standing around in the air

wonder why nobody does that anymore.

Keith Giffen, I adore Keith Giffen. His career is filled with brilliant ideas that don't work. He's tried everything. Most none of it works. BUT HE DID IT!

He was "co-plotter and designer" for issues #3-#5. That probably means he did breakdowns. He was assisted by Steve Lightle, who draws great robots and weird faces. Inked by Mahlstedt, whose work here raises the eternal question,

After the recent example of Legiondickery here, I though we should see a slightly better example of a Legion Recruitment drive....

From 1985 Paul Levitz and Steve Lightle bring us
