In Marvel's X-Men, a "Dominion" is a network of greater machine intellects that has assumed god-like power. Why not compare the Marvel concept of an evolved machine mind becoming a deity to the Distinguished Competition's approach, a couple of decades ago in Legion (of superheroes, but we're too cool for that part, right?).

For a little context, it is the 31st century, and this is the reboot Legion (or the Legion of Reality-247 if you want to get Johnsian about it). Our heroes have recently thwarted an attempt to artificially evolve humanity by Ra's al Ghul (or a sentient pool of blood that thought it was Ra's - I'm not sure that ever got fully explained).

In the wake of this conflict, an army of alien robots has invaded Earth, led by a forgotten AI supervillain. Its goal is not conquest (that would be for when DnA re-mix elements of their Legion run a few years later for Annihilation: Conquest) but to usurp the evolutionary process and ascend to deity-dom!

News is just coming in of noted comic book artist Steve lightle having passed unexpectedly at the tragically young age of 61, due to cardiac arrest related to a COVID 19 infection

I'm sure I join everyone in expressing our sympathies for their loss to his family and friends, of whom he had many, being a genial and pleasant chap on facebook for a good few years.

My first exposure to his work remains probably my favourite; the 1980's Legion of Superheroes, where his slightly cartoony style seemed eminently suited to the sci-fi adventures of brightly costumed superheroes.

And this remains one of my favourite issues, one of the (in)famous "Legion Try Out" issues, in this case from 1985 (with story my Paul Levitz) which goes a bit more smoothly than some of it's predecessors

It used to be the tradition around these here parts to post fan art on Thursday, comic themed, but not comic published, art by fans or professionals.

So share your commissions or interesting art you've seen. (If in doubt, check with the artist it's okay to post it and if they say no, then it's a no!)

Just for fun )

'When I started writing this, I was told, "Have fun." That's a great mandate, and DC stuck by it. The larger Convergence concept is a huge epic that plays out in the main miniseries. Our tie-ins feed into that and hopefully enrich the main story, but they're basically self-contained stories revisiting beloved characters. So it's win-win.' - Stuart Moore

Oh my, this IS a tough one, I've been a sucker for team books all my life; the X-Men, the New Mutants, the Legion of Super-Heroes, the JLA, the JSA (Who I mostly knew about through the JLA/JSA crossovers), the All-Star Squadron, Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol, the Batman Family (which I knew when it was at the more ... manageable scale of one Batman, one Batgirl, one Robin and then a replacement Robin and a Nightwing... not that I didn't like the additions, but...) and of course, the New Teen Titans. I'd even count the five principle Bronze Saints from Saint Seiya as a team.

All these have been part of my comic reading experience since the age of... well let's not go there, so picking one is like being asked to pick between a boxful of cute, but different puppies. It's almost impossible.

But, whilst I've posted a LOT of New Mutants and New Teen Titans and Batman Family stuff over the years, there was always one team which was THE team... and it might not be one you'd think of, but it holds a special place in my heart.

The Legion of Super-Heroes )

OK gang, it's time for LOSH #23, "Aftermath," and you all know what THAT means....

 photo p2_LOSH-23_preview.jpg

On the upside, we do get lovely Kevin Maguire art for Aftermath. If you've ever wanted to see what Maguire could do with Bouncing Boy - and if not, why not?!? - this ish is your chance.

Everything since the crash is a cauchemar. )

And that's it until some other creator decides to reopen the toybox. Long Live the Legion!

Arrggggh.... I'm doing it again, I can feel myself getting tetchy and irritable and I haven't even started reading my comic stash for this week... and that pisses me off at myself, Lord only knows what it does to others..

So, as is my wont in such cases, I will make a conscious effort to accentuate the positive... and how better to start that than with the comic book equivalent of "Stupid Pet Tricks"?

It's Legion of Super-Heroes try-out time! )

Well, this was...messy. Two full pages and individual panels to make up maybe a third page and a half.

There must still be hidden defenses! )

And so hastily ends the Fatal Five Destroy Everything arc. Next issue, we tie up ... THE UNIVERSE ... as the series ends.

Art is by the tagless Jeff Johnson on pencils and Andy Smith on inks.

Four pages from LOSH #21, "Endings: Part One," or, the battle of Metropolis.

I won't keep you in suspense: As of this issue, the Fatal Five are still the Fatal Four (three if you don't count Validus, who's floating in orbit where the Sorcerors' World used to be). This had better be the reveal to end all reveals after this buildup.

Moving on, however...

You are all dead - you simply haven't fallen in your graves yet! (no, not a Didio quote) )

Art on this issue is by Jeff Johnson, who I don't believe has a tag.

Sorry I'm so late with this gang, had minor surgery this week that's slowed me down. However, here's 4 pages from LOSH #20, "Vanishing World," the latest installment of the Fatal Five saga.

It's a wise child who knows the way home. )

The plan, it seems to me, is not exactly coming together. Yet.

Tag notes: Mods, I accidentally clicked creator: francis manapul as well as actual artist Francis Portela's tag, can you delete? Also, I could've sworn we had a White Witch tag already?
perletwo: substitute superman (mon-el)
[personal profile] perletwo
Four pages from Legion #19, out today. Except for a brief check-in with the crash-landed team, almost the entire issue is Mon-El going toe-to-toe with the Emerald Empress on Weber's World.

Pretty green death! )
Mods, there's no tag yet for the second artist on this ish, Jeff Johnson, can we get one or are we totally maxed out now? He did about half the ish (as you see from the credits on the first posted page) and I hate to just ignore him.

Back again with four pages from the hot off the press Legion of Super-Heroes #18, part 2 of the return of the Fatal Five. You'll recall that last issue in part 1, things fell apart rather spectacularly. We spent all our time with two teams of Legionnaires last issue; this time we check in with the rest, and things aren't looking any better on the home front.

There's nothing we can do! )

So that's four out of five accounted for: Tharok, Persuader, Validus and the one in the next ish teaser. Will it be faithful old Mano, or someone new in the fifth slot?
perletwo: losh big universe big trouble (legion - big universe)
[personal profile] perletwo
Hi ho Legion fans, 4 pages from LOSH #17 here. Remember the last page of last ish, how a complex quark relay station quietly goes about its business...until suddenly it doesn't? Well, as David said in Prometheus, big things have small beginnings, and so to this ish's title, "The Beginning of the End"!

Total system failure... )
NEXT ISSUE tagline: It Gets Worse. Whooboy.

Incidentally, anybody heard any word on where/when the Legion Lost crew is likely to fetch up next?
perletwo: substitute superman (mon-el)
[personal profile] perletwo
3 pages from LOSH #16, a filler issue in which we hang out, elect a new Legion leader, and move the last pieces into place for the return of the Fatal Five.

But I won't keep you in suspense about the popularity contest leadership election!

and the red scrunchie goes to... )
Next issue: Things Fall Apart.
perletwo: blok made a funny (hee - blok & mysa)
[personal profile] perletwo
...almost none of which will I be showing you, in order to keep to the new-issue posting limits. 4 pages.

...it's time for you to diiiieeee.... )
NEXT: VALIDUS!

Things are still building slowly in this weeks LOSH #14, but they are building. Four pages.

You start the fire - I'll provide plenty of fuel. )

Love that teaser for next ish, because "Witch in a Time Storm" means either Glorith or Mysa will be turning up. Either would be dandy by me!
perletwo: cosmic boy is magnetic (legion - cosmic boy)
[personal profile] perletwo
Interestingly, while Legion Lost is firing on almost all thrusters in the current issue, LOSH #13 is idling in low gear for a bit. It's a bridge issue between the Dominators mess of the past several issues and the next big thing, whatever it may be. Meanwhile, we get to see the Legionnaires going about their workaday business, some of which actually does involve mining. I bring you 4 pages of checking in with the troops.

Why are we doing this, exactly? )

So there you go. Remember, kids, Legion elections coming up, cast your vote for leader by Nov. 16!

ETA: We've maxed out on tags already, really? I gotta whole slew of newbie Legionnaires to tag here!
perletwo: substitute superman (mon-el)
[personal profile] perletwo
2 pages from the new issue.

So as you'll recall, Brainiac 5 and Dream Girl have been kidnapped by the Dominators. Everybody and their brother knows it's the Dominators. But thanks to POLITICS!!! the Legion has been forbidden to rescue them unless they present proof to the Council that it's the Dominators.

Still bickering, Cosmic Boy suggests Mon-El try magic - either via Glorith (remember her?) or a call to the Black Witch (remember her?). He declines, but it does remind him someone else still exists. So back to the Council they go...

Reasonable doubt? You be the judge. )

So basically they're just staking it all on that character's clout? Okaaaay.
