DC Comics' First Magical Girl!
May. 15th, 2010 07:28 pmskjamOne of the cool things about DC's long and varied history (and habit of buying other companies' characters) is that you can find almost any kind of oddball character type if you just look hard enough. For example, DC made a stab at the magical girl subtype years before such characters suddenly became popular in America. These scans of "The Enchantress of Terror Castle" are from Adventure Comics #417, (3 pages of 9), but it's a reprint from Strange Adventures #187 (April 1966.) Incidentally, the first Japanese magical girl anime and manga began appearing in 1966 too, a case of congruent evolution....
( Really, it's clearly in the subgenre. )
That just leaves the Supergirl story from this issue unscanned...

This is the Golden Age Vigilante, but a Silver Age edging into Bronze Age story--his first appearance since being reintroduced in JLA #78-79 with the other members of the Seven Soldiers of Victory.
( This is not shaping up to be one of his better days. )

Frazetta Memorial Week--Shining Knight
May. 11th, 2010 09:44 pmskjamIn honor of the late great Frank Frazetta, here's a couple of pages (2 of 6) of one of his "Shining Knight" stories. This was a reprint in "Adventure Comics" #417 (March 1972) but originally appeared in Adventure Comics #161 (February 1951).

perletwoPretty nice little issue. It consists of 3 10-page stories, 1 starring the Legion in the 31st century, 1 with Mon-El and Conner in the 21st century, and 1 with a look at General Lane's private war; all point the reader to Last Stand of New Krypton #1, coming to the stands soon.
I've got crops (not my own scans) of two pages of the 21st century story for y'all today; if the first page seems a little disjointed it's because it's half of a two-page spread. I sincerely hope this little scene has smutficcers out there hard at work as we speak...

The Death of the Earth 2 Batman

This is the death of Bruce Wayne. Bruce looks like he is in his 60s here. Dick is still Robin but is all grown up now, and his biological daughter Helena is the Huntress.
Bruce comes out of a year long retirement one year after Selina his wife was shot and killed.
If this issue isn't deserving of the title "Manly Tears", I don't know what is...
The comic is 68 pages, but the Batman part is just the beginning.

Fun idea for a book . I think DC should bring it back. This version is from the 80's reader could create heroes and mail them in ,winner appeared in the book. I can only imagine how many large breasted slutty costumes heroines sprang from the minds of 13 year-old boys...
